The United States has clarified its policy in Syria, signalling an end to its backing of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces and placing its support behind Ahmed al-Sharaa and the Syrian government.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, former US ambassador and deputy assistant secretary of state Henry Ensher says Washington has told the Kurds that an independent political or military role is no longer part of US national security policy. He argues the move gives al-Sharaa a rare opportunity to unify Syria after more than a decade of war.
