The United States and Iran prepare for indirect negotiations in Geneva as both sides signal diplomacy but deep mistrust remains.
The United States and Iran are set to begin a third round of indirect talks in Geneva to discuss Tehran’s nuclear programme. Tensions remain high, even as both sides say they prefer a diplomatic solution. Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has met with his Omani counterpart in Geneva, who is facilitating the talks. Araghchi says Tehran believes a fair and balanced agreement is within reach. Previously he has said that Iran will under no circumstances develop a nuclear weapon while insisting the country has a right to peaceful nuclear technology. US officials accuse Iran of advancing missile capabilities they say could eventually reach the United States.
