Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued an open letter to the American people, stating that Iran harbours no hostility towards the US, Europe, or neighbouring countries, but warning that attacks on its vital infrastructure constitute war crimes with consequences extending far beyond Iran’s borders. The letter, described by analysts as part of a “war of narratives” between Tehran and Washington, comes hours before a scheduled address by US President Donald Trump and amid Trump’s claims that Iran has requested a ceasefire. Pezeshkian framed Iran as the victim of an imposed war, drawing parallels to the 1980s Iran-Iraq conflict, and questioned whether “America First” truly reflects the priorities of the US government. The Iranian president sought to build a rift between the American people and the Trump administration by emphasising that Iran has not attacked anyone and is exercising its legitimate right to self-defence. The outreach follows similar messaging from Iran’s Supreme Leader, who also addressed the nation on the anniversary of Islamic Republic Day.
