President Trump has announced a five-day pause on strikes against Iranian power plants, claiming the US is close to a deal with Iran—though Tehran has denied any direct negotiations. As regional diplomacy intensifies.
On an Al Jazeera discussion panel, Israeli columnist Gideon Levy said he takes Trump’s claims “very seriously,” believing the US and Iran are closer than ever to ending the war, despite Tehran’s denials. He warned that Trump would be “low and cheap” if the five-day delay is merely buying time for US ground troops to arrive. Levy argued that Israel cannot conduct the war without US military and financial backing, meaning Netanyahu will have to “bite his lips” and follow whatever deal Trump makes.
Ross Harrison, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, expressed hope that Trump’s overture is sincere but cautioned that the administration lacks the “bench strength” to navigate the complex regional realities. He noted that Trump has consistently miscalculated Iranian intentions and that US credibility has been eroded by walking away from the JCPOA and striking Iran during previous talks. Harrison added that Iran’s next generation of leaders will be “seared” by this war and will trust only their own deterrence capability, not outside powers.
