Trump says US should have a say in choosing Iran’s next leader after Khamenei killing

The United States and Israel have launched a sustained bombing campaign on Iran, escalating tensions across the region. President Donald Trump has also said Washington must have a say in choosing Iran’s next leader following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Al Jazeera’s Mike Hanna, reporting from Washington DC, said Trump told Politico that the US would “work with the people and the regime” to ensure a leader who can rebuild Iran but without nuclear weapons. Trump also claimed the US has “unlimited weapons” and that Iran’s military has been largely destroyed, despite criticism at home that he bypassed Congress to launch the war.
From Tehran, Al Jazeera’s Mohamed Vall said Iranian leaders insist the succession process is continuing according to the constitution and reject any US role in choosing the next leader. He described life in the capital as “hell”, with constant bombardment, while officials maintain a defiant stance and continue launching missiles and drones.
Thomas Warwick, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and former US Department of Homeland Security deputy assistant secretary for counterterrorism policy, told Al Jazeera Trump is effectively “staking a claim” for a leader willing to negotiate over Iran’s nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief, though he said such a political shift in Iran would take time and remains uncertain.
